|
The Centre for Astronomy of Heidelberg University (ZAH) is the largest
university astronomy group within Germany.
With more than 100 scientists, thereof one
third are diploma and PhD students.
The broad spectrum of scientific activity
ranges from
research in planet formation and galaxy
evolution to cosmology
including the development and building of astrophysical instrumentation.
The interdependence of the different fields
is reflected in the
research profile
as well as in the
projects and cooperations.
The establishment of the ZAH strengthens even further the position of Heidelberg in the field of astronomy. Core functions of the ZAH are fundamental research in astronomy and astrophysics as well as the promotion of junior scientists. The ZAH is closely connected to the Faculty for Physics and Astronomy and cooperates with the Max-Planck institutes for Astronomy and for Nuclear Physics (MPIA and MPIK) in research as well as in the education of university students. The ZAH was recently established by joining the former state institutes
